  • To find the "possible" rational roots, you have to list all of the possibilities for p/q where p is the factors of the last term, and q is the factors of the first term. (Assuming that the terms are listed in decreasing order of power.) In this case p = 9 and q = 3. Factors of p - 1, 3, 9. Factors of q - 1, 3. Now, looking at all of the possibilities of p/q = 1/1, 1/3, 3/1, 3/3, 9/1, 9/3. Simplifying you just get p/q = 1, 3, 9, 1/3 (all of which are plus or minus) giving 8 possibilities.
