They do have a transmission, but they are only one speed forward and reverse. When they do the burn out they fully engage the clutch to spin the tires. Then the use reverse to back up to the line. Then the launch to race a pnumatic system slowley engages the multi step clutch allowing it to slip to keep the wheels from spinning. By the end of the race the clutch is fully engaged and has welded itself together from all the heat. The use a new one every race.
