There are various reasons... 1. The film director/producer and the cast have to be really stupid to let that erroneous line get through the movie. 2. Erica is playing a psychological game with the lieutenant colonel. 3. It is to show the ignorance of young people. 2 and 3 sound more like it.

When I read it, it had seemed as if the USA had been in some enormous war where it was attacked & Texas capital had changed from it. I thought it did, I don't quite recall, I read it so long ago.
