I couldn’t imagine trying to raise my children in a country that is dangerous and rampant with gang violence and exploitation of women and children. I would be desperate to find a better life for my family too. It breaks my heart to see people suffer, no matter where they are from. As a child of a Vietnam veteran, I see the importance of taking care of those who put their lives in danger for the very people who are making all the laws that govern the country. It is another example of how “ it does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step” (Jeremiah 10:23).

Archie BunkerAnd if it's that dangerous, then there is a right way to go about coming here. Follow the rules and I have no problem reaching out a helping hand. Come here, learn the language and get a job. If you want to come here only to try and turn our country into the one you just left, then go back.

It's deplorable. To elaborate: The NY State Assembly's Higher Education Committee voted to block A2991 ("The Hawley bill", which would expand MERIT scholarship eligibility to children of soldiers killed in non-combat action), so that the bill would not even get a vote. The $2.5M funding is just an estimate. The bill might cost the state more or less than that amount. On the other hand the $27M in additional funding that the NY State Assembly passed for "dreamers" (children of residents who moved to the USA illegally) was specifically allocated.

Agreed. It's sad when we leave Americans behind (especially veterans) in favor of someone who is not even American. I get encouraging college for dreamers and even offering some incentives, but to this extent? Craziness.

I think the people of New York need to decide if this is what they want, and if not they need to DO THEIR CIVIC DUTY and VOTE THEIR CONSCIENCE. This is the fault of the people of New York. Any time anyone in America complains about 'the government' they need to do so with votes and letters to their representatives. They wouldn't be running the place if THE PEOPLE didn't put them there to do it. EACH AMERICAN needs to do their jobs as citizens and see to it this doesn't happen because they didn't care enough to stop it! As Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

The problem Linda is that this is what the people of New York want. They put these morons in office because all they keep hearing is "free stuff" but later on complain about the high taxes in their state. And when the federal funds are shut off, they complain even louder.

https://www.liherald.com/stories/veteran-support-disparities-immigration-policy-impact-anthony-despositio,207285 What a great country the USA is? You have vetrens competeing with scum bag illegal immigrants for basic food and a roof over their head. Only a pathetic democrat could think that is all right can you get any more pathetic than that?

In the "land of opportunity," immigrants, just like your ancestors deserve an opportunity in America. So there goes your question. Immigrants make significant economic contributions and are integral members of communities across the US. Immigration relief is necessary to continue growing the economy and strengthening communities.
