Although most states require you to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage, other types of coverage are usually optional. In 49 states (Florida excluded), motorcyclists must at least obtain liability coverage before legally being able to ride.
Types
The three main types of insurance motorcyclists use for coverage are liability, comprehensive and collision.
Liability Insurance
Liability coverage is the main required insurance plan for motorcycles. If you induce bodily injury to someone else or cause property damage while riding, liability insurance ensures you are covered. It does not cover you or your motorcycle, however. Guest liability coverage is helpful if you have an additional person riding with you.
Collision Insurance
If you incur damage to your motorcycle in an accident with another motorcycle, automobile or stationary object, collision insurance will cover damage to your bike.
Comprehensive Insurance
Comprehensive insurance coverage protects your motorcycle against theft, vandalism and damage caused by natural elements (e.g., wind, fire, storms and earthquakes).
Additional Coverage
Uninsured motorist coverage, medical coverage and roadside assistance are other helpful types of coverage, albeit never mandatory.
Considerations
Certain factors such as seasonal or protective storage, anti-theft devices, a good driving record and/or successful completion of motorcycle safety courses can all bring the cost of your insurance down. Your insurance agent can help determine which discounts are applicable to the coverage plan you seek.

To my knowledge all states require insurance for all motor vehicles, including motorcycles.
