We had a wood stove in the kitchen and an oil furnace in the basement. We didn't use the furnace much and spent a lot of time in the kitchen - which is why most old farm houses have huge kitchens -- it was more than just a place to cook, it was a meeting place for warmth. Ahhh ... the good old days. (sometimes!). :)

for the swimming pool??? a copper coil on the roof and a minimal power consumption pump. Year one the cost was higher but in the long run it was a better system than the electric heater.

My parents used coal and those type of heaters on walls..I can't think of the name.

We used a combination of an oil heater, a coal furnace, a wood stove, and lots and lots of blankets and quilts.

my 1st house was built in the 20's it had a kick butt steam heating system.

Coal and wood burning fireplaces and gas space heaters.

Wood, coal, oil, and kero, and they were dirt cheap!

Steam was in the early 1900's, oil and gas were big mid century, then electric, now solar and radiant. wood burning and coal go way back, wood is still big.
